What is Bucephalandra sp. "Catarina"?
Bucephalandra "Catarina" is a hardy, slow-growing rhizome plant from Borneo, loved for its compact, spade-shaped dark green leaves that develop a subtle blue sheen and fine pale spotting under good lighting. Like all Bucephalandra, it's an epiphyte — attach the rhizome to hardscape rather than burying it, and it will slowly form a dense, characterful clump. Each plant arrives potted in rockwool, ready to plant or split.
Key Benefits for Your Aquarium
- Hardy and beginner-friendly: thrives in low to medium light with no CO2 required (better colour and a more compact form with both).
- Shrimp- and fish-safe: a favourite in Caridina and Neocaridina tanks, with leaves that gather biofilm for shrimp to graze on.
- Compact and characterful: the rounded leaves and blue-tinged sheen make it a striking detail on wood and rock.
- Attach anywhere: tie or glue the rhizome to hardscape for foreground and midground accents.
- Slow, tidy growth: stays compact and low-maintenance, and propagates easily by splitting the rhizome.
Care Guide
- Lighting: low to medium (higher light deepens colour)
- CO2: not required (beneficial)
- Placement: attach rhizome to hardscape — do not bury it
- Temperature: 22–28°C
- Growth rate: slow
