The primary reason to use catappa leaves is their effect on water chemistry and the overall well-being of the aquarium inhabitants.

Blackwater Effect and Conditioning: When placed in the tank, the leaves slowly decompose, releasing tannins and humic acids into the water. These compounds gently lower the pH, helping to mimic the soft, slightly acidic "blackwater" conditions found in many natural tropical habitats, which is ideal for sensitive species like Caridina shrimp and Betta fish.

Disease Prevention: The tannins released have mild antibacterial and antifungal properties. They can help to prevent minor infections, reduce stress, and promote healing for fish or shrimp that have minor scrapes or fin damage.

Natural Food Source and Habitat: As the leaves soften and break down, they provide a continuous source of grazing material. This biofilm and leaf matter is an essential part of the diet for shrimp (especially shrimplets) and snails. They also offer excellent hiding places and cover for small or shy inhabitants.

Usage and Maintenance

Preparation: You can usually drop the leaves directly into the tank, though some keepers prefer to boil them briefly first to help them sink faster and release tannins quicker.

Water Color: The leaves will tint the water a light amber or yellowish-brown color. This is normal and is a sign that the beneficial tannins are being released.

Replacement: The leaves typically take several weeks to months to fully decompose. Once they are reduced to skeletons or have been fully consumed, they can be removed and replaced with new ones.
