How to acclimate new shrimp

Proper acclimation helps reduce stress and gives shrimp a smoother transition into their new aquarium. For the safest start, we recommend drip acclimation whenever possible.

01 Recommended method

Drip acclimation

Drip acclimation is the gentlest way to introduce new shrimp into an aquarium. By slowly mixing aquarium water with the shipping water over about 2 hours, shrimp have more time to adjust to their new environment.

What you need

  • A clean container or bucket
  • Airline tubing
  • A valve, clamp, or loose knot to control the drip
  • A shrimp net
  • Airstone

Step by step

  1. 01 Shut off the aquarium lights before starting.
  2. 02 Gently empty the shrimp and the shipping water into a clean container.
  3. 03 Start a siphon from your aquarium to the container using airline tubing.
  4. 04 Adjust the flow so the water drips slowly and steadily.
  5. 05 Let the aquarium water mix gradually with the shipping water for about 2 hours so the shrimp can adjust.
  6. 06 Once acclimation is complete, carefully net the shrimp into the aquarium.
  7. 07 Discard the shipping water instead of pouring it into the tank.

DO

  • Take your time and keep the drip slow and steady
  • Acclimate for about 2 hours
  • Use a clean container for acclimation
  • Shut off the lights to help reduce stress
  • Transfer the shrimp gently with a net
  • Observe the shrimp after adding them to the tank

DON'T

  • Rush the acclimation process
  • Pour shipping water into your aquarium
  • Expose shrimp to sudden temperature or parameter changes
  • Handle shrimp roughly during transfer
  • Feed immediately if the shrimp still seem stressed
02 Quicker method

Drop and pop

Drop and pop is a faster acclimation method sometimes used when a simpler transfer is needed. Let the bag float in the tank for about 30 minutes first, then gently take the shrimp out and place them into the aquarium.

Step by step

  1. 01 Shut off the aquarium lights before starting.
  2. 02 Let the shrimp bag float in the tank for about 30 minutes so the temperature can adjust.
  3. 03 Open the bag carefully.
  4. 04 Use a shrimp net to gently take the shrimp out and place them into the aquarium.
  5. 05 Discard the shipping water.

DO

  • Let the bag float for about 30 minutes first
  • Shut off the lights to help reduce stress
  • Net the shrimp in gently
  • Keep the process calm and simple
  • Use this only when you need a faster transfer

DON'T

  • Add the bag water to the aquarium
  • Shake or disturb the shrimp during transfer
  • Use this method if the shrimp already seem heavily stressed
  • Treat it as the best option when drip acclimation is possible
